Gibbs’ Rule #8: Never take anything for granted.
My mentor is Leroy Jethro Gibbs from NCIS. You’ve heard it before in different circumstances, but it’s true. Never take anything for granted. We forget to be grateful for what we have until it’s gone. Here’s an example. When I was made, I had a Chicago Blackhawks outfit. It was awesome. We won the Cup that year and I looked and felt amazing. Everything was great. Then someone threw up on me and I got too many holes in the washing machine to continue life in that body. We began the search for a new body but it was far more difficult than we expected. There were no longer any of me in Chicago, and there had never been any here in Calgary. Online we found several options but all were either unavailable or sold out. Finally we found a New York Rangers version of me on Amazon. I was excited to have a new body with no holes but when it came, it was discovered that my arm had been sewn on backwards and I had a couple holes along the seams that had to be repaired. Plus, we never get to see Rangers games here. I couldn’t stay in the Chicago body if I wanted to have fun with the boys so I switched to the Rangers body, but life is difficult with a backwards arm. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to not be able to give ‘two thumbs up’? I’m always one up and one down. I can’t clap, everything I lift up falls down, and I can’t hold an ice cream cone. But I am thankful, because I get to enjoy life being with the people I love. And I don’t take them, or our warm house, or food or blankets or anything for granted. You just never know.
